Stimulus is meant to create a reaction. Advertisements, billboards, podcasts, the smell of McDonalds, the scratch and sniff sticker on air fresheners - our senses are stimulated when we interact with stimuli. Many in the professional world are controlled and calculated stimuli to create a specific reaction. We just don't know this is happening subconsciously. It's fascinating. What's even more fascinating? When we are able to replicate this in our own lives. If we listen to emotions and feelings, becoming more aware of our reactions, we can start to craft ways to counteract negative stimuli. Feeling upset about slow drivers? Don't drive in the furthest right lane anymore. Having trouble concentrating at home when doing work? Create a special place to work and put lavender scented candles at your desk. Feel like you aren't progressing in your studies? Make a new habit of reading the latest research publications for 20 minutes every morning. Our feelings have a purpose and while bottling it up or "ignoring it" may seem like a good idea - it will come out one way or another. Our happiness is in our control if we believe it. Using our feelings and internal emotions to gauge how we need to adapt is one way to get there.
